To mark Black History Month this year, we will be featuring Black geographers from the 1800s to the present day who have a connection to the Society and who have contributed to a better understanding of our world.
Every Thursday during October we will be sharing the profiles of leading Black geographers from across geographical research, teaching, fieldwork, policy, and public engagement on our website and via social media.
During Black History Month we are also taking the opportunity to revisit some of our previous projects on underrepresented or excluded geographers in the Society’s Collections, including Crossing Continents and Hidden Histories of Exploration. These projects demonstrate how it is possible to use archival materials to recover stories of those previously ignored, forgotten and deliberately excluded from the record, including Black geographers.
