The Society has awarded accreditation to four programmes in the latest cycle of the undergraduate and Master’s programme accreditation schemes. Three programmes at the University of Huddersfield (BSc Geography, BSc Human Geography, BSc Physical Geography) and one Master’s programme at University College London (MSc Smart Cities and Urban Analytics) have received recognition. Through the scheme, the Society aims to recognise good practice in geography learning and teaching across UK higher education, while supporting continuous quality improvement and promoting good student outcomes across the sector.
Professor Michael Ginger (University of Huddersfield) said: "New geography degrees at the University of Huddersfield have received significant investments in new facilities, equipment and staff appointments. Accreditation gives our students, applicants and prospective employers confidence that our provision is firmly in line with sector norms and is forward-looking.”
He added: “Working along continuums of size and time, ranging from populations to atoms and eons to seconds, we’re encouraging our students to develop academic curiosity and critical evaluation skills addressing the big challenges of climate, biodiversity, inequality, and injustice. The School of Applied Sciences is exceedingly pleased to see our talented team of innovative educators, each working at the cutting edge of their research field, receive this recognition from the Society.”
The MSc Smart Cities and Urban Analytics programme at UCL becomes one of the first Master’s programmes to be accredited after the Society launched its Master’s accreditation scheme last year. Dr Andy MacLachlan (Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, UCL) said: “This is testament to the dedication of our academic and professional services staff, both supporting and facilitating effective learning through research and inquiry, especially over the last year of online learning.”
The next deadline for applications (both undergraduate and Master’s) is 30 September 2021.
