Discovering the Weddell Sea

As part of the Weddell Sea project Discovering the Weddell Sea - Education for Antarctic Conservation, we have created several teaching resources, all of which are free to access.

The resources include interactive features and posters on the complex geographies of the Weddell Sea, as well as the unique Discovering the Weddell Sea Album app which can be downloaded from the Microsoft store, Google Play and Apple App Store.

Explore the full range of Discovering the Weddell Sea - Education for Antarctic Conservation resources, which:

• introduce students to the geography of Antarctica through our interactive Antarctic jigsaw and resources on the ocean floor of the Weddell Sea

• explore important currents in the Antarctic using interactives on Antarctic circumpolar cogs, the Weddell Sea Gyre and the role of Antarctic Bottom Water in global ocean circulations.

• look at environmental change and pollution in the Antarctic, with interactives on climate change in Antarctica and plastics in the Weddell Sea

• feature Antarctic exploration and the expeditions of Amundsen, Shackleton and the Transantarctic Expedition of Edmund Hillary

• include posters explaining the Weddell Sea  and the Antarctic Treaty

Our resources were recognised in 2021 with a Highly Commended Award from the Geographical Association (GA).

You can also view our related resources developed for the 2019 Weddell Sea expedition, which include activities, posters and other resources for KS2-KS5.These were also Highly Commended by the GA in 2020.
