Geo: Geography and Environment is the Society’s open access, online-only journal. A recent upgrade now allows audio and video files to be hosted directly within its articles, rather than as supplementary features, allowing authors to present their data analysis in a more dynamic way.
Launched in 2014, Geo publishes papers that cover the whole spectrum of geographical and environmental research, however it specialises in papers that use innovative theories, methods, and data sets. As an online-only journal, Geo has always looked to make full use of the online publishing environment to try and both challenge traditional conceptions of what an academic paper looks like and pioneer new styles of academic papers. Geo has often also been at the forefront of technological advances in publishing.
The recent system upgrade for enriched media figures allows for unlimited possibilities, for example, it might be used to present:

Direct recordings of interviews or soundscapes

Spoken word poetry or music recordings

Video footage of human or environmental processes, including slow motion, drone, and time-lapse footage

Animated flythroughs of virtual or physical environments

Animated cartographic features, such as maps showing change over time, phase-shift diagrams, and stratigraphic layering processes
