Earlier this year, the Society and the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) collaborated on a series of panel events exploring ethical issues in location data use. The webinars also discussed the Locus Charter principles for ethical practice with geospatial data, to which the Society is a signatory.
As a follow on, the AGI has released a series of blog posts to share advice from the discussions with practitioners:
Take my word for it: Communication, transparency and creating trust
Where’s the harm? Geospatial data ethics in practice
A right to be lost: bias, anonymity, privacy
A new generation of location data ethics with the Locus Charter
Visit our Locus Charter hub page to find out more about the Charter and how geographers are engaging with debates around the ethics of location data use. You can also catch up with recordings of the webinars here.
Over the past few months, the Society’s seven current PhD students have continued to carry out their research on the Collections, as well as several associated activities related to their projects.
The Society has published a new report, I didn’t have any teachers that looked like me, which highlights the experiences of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) geography teachers while studying and teaching the discipline.
There has never been a better or more important time to study geography at university, but the application process, particularly writing your personal statement, can seem daunting.
