The latest addition to the RGS-IBG book series, Geographies of anticolonialism: political networks across and beyond south India, c.1900-1930, is now available to order online.
Written by Dr Andy Davies (University of Liverpool), the book explores Indian anticolonialism using a varied selection of historical sources and literature. Anticolonialism can be defined as internal and external resistance to practices and by-products of colonial rule including racism, militarism and resource exploitation, and is explicitly political in nature.
In the book Dr Davies focuses on a specific group, the ‘Pondichery Gang’, and investigates their significant impact. Despite their short period of activity, members of the group became spiritual gurus, reinvigorated the Tamil language and conducted the only political assassination in the south of India. Through exploring these activities Geographies of anticolonialism helps readers understand the diverse nature of anticolonialism, which is an often overlooked concept in geography.
