Congratulations to the newest members of our Council, who were elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday.
The AGM was opened with a speech by Society President, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, who thanked Society staff, members of Council, Society Director Professor Joe Smith and Immediate Past President Nicholas Crane, for their advice and guidance in her first year as President. She also highlighted the pressing issue of human-wildlife conflict, poaching and the need to protect the Earth’s biodiversity.
She said: “Just for a short while, let me ask you to think not about our Royal Geographical Society, but about the wider developing world society: about the need for human help to those communities living in the wilds, as well as in the most densely populated areas of the developing world alongside the wild animals of our planet. Without wildlife protection, we cannot check the assault on biodiversity; or on the biosphere as a whole. We have to address the whole issue of this crowded Earth.”
After the welcome address, our new members of Council were elected.
The six newly elected trustees will join 16 existing members of Council, who are responsible for the governance of the Society. Thank you to our outgoing members of Council for their hard work and dedication to the Society.
After the conclusion of the AGM, our Medals and Awards Ceremony celebrated the achievements of 21 geographers across the discipline, and the Annual Reception celebrated the ongoing success of the Society. Congratulations to all those who received an award and thank you to all our Fellows and members for making the Society what it is.
