The first in the next batch of episodes of our partnered BBC Radio 4 series, 39 Ways to Save the Planet, will be broadcast today.
The show, presented by environmental journalist Tom Heap FRGS, showcases 39 ideas to relieve the stress that climate change is placing on the Earth.
The upcoming episodes explore how sprinkling crushed rock on fields can act as a fertiliser and capture carbon, how gravity can help turn our electricity grid green, and how retrofitting new technology can insulate old homes amongst other ideas, with each edition viewing the fundamental problem of our age from a fresh perspective. All of the ideas are practical, feasible and carbon-cutting. At the end of each 15-minute episode, Tom will be joined by climate scientist Dr Tamsin Edwards FRGS to gauge the quantity of carbon dioxide that each idea can remove from the atmosphere if adopted on a mass scale.
The radio broadcasts and podcasts of the series will be supported by online public events and educational outreach activity coordinated by the Society. Tom Heap’s new book which accompanies the series will be published by Ebury this autumn.
Today’s episode of 39 ways to save the planet will explore how the heat of the Sun can provide hot showers all over the world and will be broadcast at 1.45pm, with further episodes at the same time each weekday until Friday 3 September. An omnibus of the episodes from each week will be broadcast from 9.00pm to 10.00pm on Friday 27 August and Friday 3 September.
