Our new membership card for 2020 is on the way. Fellows and members will receive this card over the course of the year when they renew their membership. Don’t worry if you’ve renewed and the new card hasn’t arrived yet – you can keep using the 2019 card for now.
To speed up admittance for this year’s Monday night lectures, we will now be scanning the QR code on the back of all attendees’ membership cards on entry. Please do make sure to bring your card with you to all of our member events.
This year’s card features a photograph taken by Yi Sun, Shark Bay Study 5. Sun’s work featured in the 2019 Earth Photo exhibition, which asked pressing questions about humanity’s relationship with nature. Visitors found themselves enchanted and haunted by the final images in equal measure. Yi Sun describes how he channelled these emotions through his work:
‘I still have difficulties comprehending how something so otherworldly and beautiful could be so devastating to our environment. These images are taken 4,500 feet over some tailing ponds in Western Australia. Tailing ponds are the by-products left over from mining and extracting resources from oil sands or minerals. Some of them can be as big as hundreds of square kilometres.’
‘They contain toxic substances and heavy metals such as lead, copper and mercury, and have huge environmental impacts on the surrounding air, land, water, vegetation and wildlife.’
This year’s membership card is made from SICOECO, a biodegradable plastic which uses less crude oil than any other plastics. Be sure to dispose of it with your food waste at the end of the year.
