Prizes for outstanding undergraduate dissertations

Each year, the Society supports initiatives to recognise excellent dissertations undertaken by geography students across the UK.

Prizes are offered by the Society, its 31 research groups, the British Society for Geomorphology and the Quaternary Research Association (QRA), covering a wide spectrum of geographical specialisms.

Together, these awards promote and celebrate the high quality of undergraduate and postgraduate geographical research. Submissions are welcomed annually from geography departments for:

• The Alfred Steers Dissertation Prize recognises the best undergraduate dissertation in a UK geography department. The submission deadline for next year’s prize is 15 October 2022.

• The Society’s 31 Research Groups offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation awards, with various deadlines (most on 15 July 2022).

• Prizes are also offered by the British Society for Geomorphology and the Quaternary Research Association.

We warmly encourage departments to nominate students for these awards.

This year, the Society, QRA and Research Groups have recognised more than 20 undergraduate dissertations. See full details of award recipients here.

We were also delighted to award Jessica Edgley (Newcastle University), the 2022 Alfred Steers Prize for her dissertation A remote risk assessment of glacial lake outburst floods in the Pho Chu basin, Bhutan.
