Congratulations to Emily Chandler, who is the recipient of this year’s Rex Walford Award. Now a geography teacher at St George's British International School in Germany, Emily was previously at William Perkin CofE High School in Greenford and is a former Society Geography Teacher Training Scholar.
The Rex Walford Award is presented to trainees or early career geography teachers, including students enrolled on a PGCE, SCITT and School Direct, alongside Teach First, NQTs and others at a similar stage in their career. It is awarded for the best scheme of work, set of teaching resources and/or lesson plans developed on the same theme as the Young Geographer of the Year competition.
Entrants this year were asked to produce a scheme of work, covering at least three lessons, that focused on the theme ‘The world beyond my window’.
Head of Education and Outdoor Learning at the Society, Steve Brace, said: “I was impressed with the range of work Emily undertook to take her pupils from Greenford (in Greater London) to the wider world and how she explored a wide range of geographical connections and themes. Her work also considered how COVID-19 was changing and impacting on geographical perspectives and issues; it was a thoughtful and thorough scheme. Many congratulations.”
Emily said: “I am so honoured to receive the Red Walford Award. This year’s theme was such a great theme and really enabled me to explore the breadth of the subject with my students. I really enjoyed planning and teaching the scheme of work and was so excited when I found out that I won!”
The award is named after Rex Walford, a long-serving Fellow and former Vice President (Education) of the Society. Rex was a teacher trainer and had a passion for supporting trainee and newly qualified geography teachers.
Emily will receive a certificate, Fellowship of the Society, and prize bag of geographical goodies.
