We are delighted to share our summer events programme, full of interesting topics, ideas, and insight.
Our Monday night lecture series for Fellows and Members kicks off on 4 April with Pip Stewart recounting an incredible three-month-long kayaking adventure through Guyana's jungle terrain – with learnings that may bring inspiration to how you approach life and travel. Other speakers include Alastair Fothergill and Jeff Wilson revealing the secrets behind the making of the Disney movie, Polar bear; David Constantine MBE, co-founder of NGO Motivation, which designs and provides wheelchairs in low-income countries, discussing his photographic experiences across four continents; and Charlotte Connelly, Museum Curator for the Scott Polar Research Institute, exploring extraordinary stories of human endeavour from the world’s coldest, highest and windiest places.
Meanwhile, our Collections-related events include talks on Shackleton as a reader and writer by Dr Jan Piggot; an exploration of historical accounts of Venezuela and its people by Dr Sherezade García Rangel; and a look at the life of ornithologist, natural historian, physician and artist Edward Wilson, who ultimately perished with Scott after reaching the South Pole in 1912, by Isobel Williams.
Events organised by our regional committees feature geographer Dan Raven-Ellison discussing Slow Ways, a grassroots initiative to create a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain's towns and cities as well thousands of villages and every national park; Dr Camila Bassi exploring the geography of vaccine politics; and Nicholas Crane revealing the sage of the first international scientific expedition. In addition, multi Emmy and BAFTA award winning wildlife cameraman Toby Strong starts his regional theatres tour of the UK, talking about his encounters with incredible animals and incredible people.
This summer, the Society’s events will be held online or in-person, and many in-person events will also be livestreamed. Details of how to participate are on each event’s webpage.
