Society accredits new geography programmes

The Society has recently approved the accreditation or reaccreditation of 55 geography programmes at 14 higher education institutions across the UK. 

As part of the accreditation process, undergraduate programmes were assessed in line with the new QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography. The statement defines what can be expected of a graduate in terms of the knowledge, understanding, skills and approaches they have gained through their degree programme. 

Programmes at the following institutions were recently accredited:

• Aberystwyth University

• Keele University

• Loughborough University

• Northumbria University

• Queen's University Belfast

• University of Bristol

• University of Glasgow

• University of Leeds

• University of Liverpool

• University of Newcastle

• University of Nottingham

• University of Plymouth

• University of the West of England, Bristol

• York St John University

The Chair of the Accreditation Review Panel, Robert Francis commented:

“We’re delighted to be able to accredit these programmes. It has been fantastic to see the work going on at geography departments across the country. The review panel were impressed by the work institutions are carrying out on issues such as sustainability, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and decolonising the curriculum. We were also encouraged by the emphasis on careers and employability in many geography programmes.”
