The Society has responded to the Ofsted consultation on the Draft Education Inspection Framework, which sets out how Ofsted proposes to inspect schools, further education and skills provision, and registered early years’ settings. We encourage geography teachers to submit their own individual responses before the consultation closes on Friday 5 April.
Our response registers our support for the introduction of a ‘quality of education’ judgement, which includes a welcome focus on a school’s curriculum. It also highlights our support for increasing short inspections from one to two days to give inspectors more opportunity to fully assess a school’s curriculum offer, the thinking behind it and what it provides in practice.
Alongside this, we have suggested opportunities for strengthening the proposals to more fully recognise the need for teachers to engage with subject specialist knowledge, and how individual subjects provide their own distinctive views and perspectives.
We also recommended that school leaders and management more strongly recognise the essential support that can be provided by professional subject bodies, and identify the opportunities for teachers to have their subject expertise externally recognised through continuing professional development opportunities.
