The application deadline for our senior research grants which support fieldwork in aquatic, arid, and Arctic and high-mountain environments is fast approaching.
The Ralph Brown Expedition Award offers £12,500 to the leader of a research expedition working in an aquatic environment, including the study of coral reefs, rivers, lakes and shallow seas. 2021 recipient of the award, Dr Nicholas Girkin from Cranfield University, will be studying Central American peatlands to deliver accurate estimates for their extent, carbon storage, and vulnerability to disturbance, while working with policy makers to improve understanding and protection of peatland sites.
If you’re planning fieldwork within the Arctic or high-mountain environments, the Walters Kundert Fellowship offers an annual grant of £10,000. This year’s recipient, Dr Stephan Harrison from the University of Exeter, will be working in the Himalayas to assess the ice contents and potential water supplies of rock glaciers in Nepal, under the backdrop of climate change and its threat to mountain water resources.
The Thesiger-Oman International Fellowships offer awards of £8,000 for geographical research in both the physical and human dimensions of arid and semi-arid environments. One of two recipients of the award in 2020, Mark Moritz from Ohio State University will be studying grazing pressure in the Dhofar Mountains of Oman by tracking daily herd movements, documenting livestock distributions, and using remote sensing data on forage resources.
If you’re part of a team of researchers, the Gilchrist Fieldwork Award, from the Gilchrist Educational Trust, offers £15,000 to support significant, challenging overseas fieldwork. Applications from geographers, ecologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, earth and environmental scientists, and researchers from related fields are all strongly encouraged.
The deadline for all above grants is Tuesday 23 November. You can find out more about past projects supported by these grants and how to apply via the links above.
We have more grants available for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers, with deadlines in November and the new year.
