January saw two new co-editors, Professor Peter Kraftl (University of Leicester) and Dr Kavita Datta (Queen Mary University of London), join Dr Paul Wood (Loughborough University) at the helm of Area, one of the five journals published by the Society. The editors look to build on Area’s strengths, while taking the journal in some new directions.
Describing the legacy and scope of the journal, Peter and Kavita said:
“Since 1969 Area has published articles that have shaped geography as a discipline. As in-coming editors, we want to build on these past achievements while also charting new directions. We remain strongly committed to Area’s central mission to publish significant, high-quality papers that reflect the breadth of geography and its reputation as a space in which both earlier career and established academics engage in a productive dialogue.”
The co-editors’ aspirations for the journal are outlined in an editorial, published in the March issue of the journal.
Highlights of their aims for the future include:
- Collective ambition that the journal engages with key debates within and beyond geography and the co-production of knowledge between human and physical geographers.
- Commitment to ensuring that the journal truly represents the breadth of work currently undertaken within geography. Agenda-setting papers that engage with key debates across ‘geography’ as a whole, and its subdisciplines, are welcomed. Papers by those working in rapidly developing fields of research, such as GIS, Digital Humanities and Remote Sensing, are also strongly encouraged, along with those that reflect on novel methodological applications
- Commitment to widening the international scope of the journal and promoting contributions from scholars all over the world.
