For more than a decade, supported by the AHRC, the Society has hosted PhD students working collaboratively on our Collections. Currently, this is supported through the Science Museums and Archives Consortium (SMAC), which comprises the Science Museum Group, BT Archives, the Royal Society, and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as well as the Society. All projects involve a collaboration between a university-based researcher and the staff and (archive) materials at one of the consortium’s institutions. We are delighted to announce that the call for proposals for projects to start in autumn 2021 is now open. At the Society we are keen to encourage proposals for PhD projects within the remit of AHRC that relate to the Society’s Collections, current strategy, opportunities afforded by the Wiley Digital Archives digitisation project, and engagement with new audiences. We encourage any prospective applicants to look at the projects currently supported and earlier Collections-based projects including Crossing Continents and Hidden Histories of Exploration.
The call for proposals closes on Friday 2 October. More information is available on the SMAC website. If you are an academic from a university with a potential project that draws on the Society's Collections, or have an interest in discussing opportunities, please contact Dr Sarah Evans.
