Among the anniversaries being celebrated by the Society this year are 60 years of the Society’s Expeditions and Geographical Fieldwork Grants and 40 years of the annual fieldwork and expeditions weekend planning seminar, Explore.
Since 1956, the Expeditions and Geographical Fieldwork grants have provided funding and support to teams undertaking field research across the globe. Over 11,500 team members have been directly supported, along with countless in-country participants. Projects have been conducted in at least 148 countries across all seven continents.
Ahead of a celebration day on Friday 23 September, past grant recipients and teams are invited to share their memories of the wide range of Expeditions and Geographical Fieldwork Grants which the Society has awarded and share their transformative experiences with the next generation via a Facebook group or by emailing grants60@rgs.org
The 40th anniversary of Explore will be marked at the start of this year’s weekend, with a reunion event for previous speakers and attendees on Friday 18 November.
