Hugh Brammer (M.A. Geography, Cambridge University, 1951) worked for over 60 years as a soil scientist and agricultural advisor, becoming a leading geographer and the foremost authority on the soils and agro-ecology of Bangladesh.
He was awarded an OBE and Honorary Fellowship at the Society, and received the Society's Busk Medal in 2006 for his great contributions to the understanding of tropical soils and agriculture. He also published the book Arsenic Pollution: A Global Synthesis in the RGS-IBG Book Series in 2011.
Hugh was devoted to the investigation of the natural complexity of Bangladesh, and was honored by the President of Bangladesh and UN Food and Agriculture Organization for his work. Public policy makers and NGO’s who worked with Hugh will remember him for his considered, evidence based and truthful advice.
