Priority Places for Food Index
The Society’s popular geovisualisation image series explores the power of mapping and geographical data visualisations to tell stories about our world.
In our latest feature, a team from the Consumer Data Research Centre at the University of Leeds discuss their Priority Places for Food Index, created in collaboration with the consumer rights group Which?, showing the places most vulnerable to food insecurity in the UK during the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The index highlights indicators that can prevent people from purchasing food or that cause a lack of availability of cheap food in the local area, and is primarily intended for use by policymakers and supermarkets to target support in high priority areas. The index and associated campaign have received widespread coverage in The Times, The Guardian, Good Morning Britain, and the BBC’s Panorama.
