The Society is saddened to announce the recent death of former President, Lord Chorley on 21 February 2016.
Roger was a remarkable President who instigated and led the important forward look review in the Society in 1987, out of which arose, among other initiatives, the Society’s first ever commitment to a regional programme of activity, outside London, led by volunteer committees. The programme remains at the heart of the Society’s regional offer today.
Roger’s interests intersected with those of geography and the Society in many different ways: as a mountaineer of note, keen traveller, his interface with government policy on the environment and society most notably through the House of Lords, and as a leading proponent of Geographic Information Systems in the UK, through the ‘Chorley Report’ and successive activities.
Roger and his wife, Ann, were frequent attendees at Monday night lectures and Roger retained a passionate interest and active involvement in the Society until his death. Many of us will remember him personally for his great leadership, intellect, warmth and support.
A formal obituary will be published in The Geographical Journal in the autumn. A memorial service is being organised by his family for 19 April. Further details will follow.
