Michael Wise was an industrial and economic geographer with a strong interest in planning. He influenced the growth of geography, serving as Secretary of the RGS and President of the IBG among other roles in academic, planning and university organisations (including President of the IGU). He was closely associated with the discipline at the London School of Economics, where he was head of department. Michael Wise was awarded the Society's Gill Memorial and Founder's Medal, the IGU's Lauréat d'Honneur and a CBE. He died on 13 October 2015, aged 97.
