The latest issues of the Society’s journals are now available online. This quarter’s issue of Area includes a series of papers about the cultural geographies of coastal change, with six papers offering insight into the multifaceted nature of this topic. The papers cover various ideas including nature conservation, environmental governance and coastal management processes. Other papers in this issue include experiences of becoming participant researchers and exploring how Brexit surfaces in everyday situations.
The Geographical Journal also has a themed section in this issue consisting of six papers. Focusing on international volunteering and development in Asia, these articles question the developmental effects and consider the impacts of the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that visit the Global South in order to “do their part”. Drawing on fieldwork in Singapore, Japan, Cambodia and India, the ideas of cross-cultural experiences, and the benefits to local communities, as well as to the volunteers, are discussed. Other papers in this issue include the limits of the New Green Revolution in Africa.
The wide range of papers published in Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers and Geo include the interlinkage of geography and neuroscience, and the US government’s influence in the US South in the early 20th century. Plus, the examination of public perceptions of geoengineering based upon an ocean fertilisation experiment in the waters surrounding the islands of Haida Gwaii in British Colombia, and exploring the reasons why people evacuate or not prior to a natural disaster.
