The Society’s Research Committee has approved the formation of a Carceral Geography Working Group, bringing the total number of Research and Working Groups up to 31.
Carceral geography focuses on the spaces, practices and experiences of incarceration, including prisons, migrant detention and other forms of custody. The new Carceral Geography Working Group (CGWG) brings together scholars and researchers from across geography and related disciplines working in this area of geographical enquiry and research.
The Society’s Research and Working Groups are networks of active researchers and those with a professional interest in a particular aspect of geography and related disciplines. Each of the 31 groups supports and promotes their sub-discipline of geography through activities including running events, proposing sessions for the Annual International Conference, offering grants and dissertation awards, sharing information, publishing books, journals and blogs, and supporting the network of scholars in the UK and abroad with an interest in their branch of geography.
Fellows and members of the Society are able to join any of the Research and Working Groups. There is no additional cost and no limit on the number of groups you can join. Becoming a member of a Research or Working Group enables you to:
- Network with colleagues with similar research interests
- Keep up to date with the latest research in your specialised field
- Receive information on relevant conferences, workshops and funding opportunities
