The 8th annual international Open Access Week takes place this week. This year’s theme, “Open for Collaboration”, explores how cooperation can help facilitate greater opportunities for Open Access.
Open Access (OA) is often described in terms of “Gold Open Access”, where published papers are immediately made freely available to anyone with an internet connection, and “Green Open Access”, where papers are made available via a free-to-access repository after an embargo period.
Established by The Scholarly Publishing Resources Coalition, Open Access Week is an opportunity to share information about, and inspire wider participation in, OA. You find out more events organised worldwide from the official Open Access Week website and follow the debate online via #OAWeek.
All of the Society’s journals comply with international OA mandates and, in partnership with Wiley, the Society launched a fully Open Access journal, Geo: Geography and Environment, in 2014.
We invite you to read and enjoy OA research published in the Society’s journals. All papers published in Geo are OA, whereas papers published in Area, The Geographical Journal and Transactions of the Institute British Geographers have a purple open padlock next to the paper’s title if they are OA.
