Professor Felix Driver (Royal Holloway, University of London) gave the Annual EGR Taylor Lecture at the Society last night. The lecture series was set up to mark and celebrate the work of Professor Eva Taylor, the first woman to hold a Chair in Geography in the UK.
Professor Driver’s lecture explored the life and career of Ivy Davison, a significant contributor, in an editorial capacity, to Britain’s leading literary magazines in the interwar period. Davison served as editor of Geographical Magazine for six years.
In his talk, entitled ‘Women, editing and publishing: Ivy Davison and the Geographical Magazine in its thirty years’, Driver argued that Davison’s career as journalist, reviewer and editor sheds light on wider issues about women’s role in editorial work and popular geographical publishing during the twentieth century.
The Society’s EGR Taylor Lectures are free to attend and take place in October each year to mark the anniversary of Eva Taylor’s birthday. The event is organised with the Royal Institute of Navigation, The Hakluyt Society and SNR.
