The Society’s Younger Members’ Committee organises informal opportunities for Fellows and members to network and share geographical knowledge through a programme of geographically themed events.
A lively programme of social events is organised by the Younger Members’ Committee (YMC) throughout the year and forms one of the ways in which the Society engages with its younger members. Events allow Fellows and members to meet each other and while most attendees fall into the 20-40 age range, anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to attend.
YMC events are also open to the public and provide a great way for those unfamiliar with the Society to learn more about membership and the Society’s wide range of activities.
Regular events include monthly drinks in the Members’ bar following Monday night lectures, a Christmas quiz, a summer party, events with a focus on the Society’s Collections, and an annual evening of microlectures.
Current chair of the YMC, Adam Jones, said: “We’re a welcoming bunch of young professionals who enjoy organising geographically themed social events and activities. We encourage all to join us at future events and gatherings to find out more about our programme and the Society. There are some exciting events coming up this autumn: a geographical walk around Albertopolis, our local cultural quarter, and the annual Christmas quiz, which is always a lot of fun.”
The Younger Members’ Committee are currently seeking speakers for the 2017 Geographical journeys: microlectures event, which is a night of inspirational tales of adventure and discovery from the next generation of travellers. This is a fantastic opportunity for first-time speakers to present in the Society’s Ondaatje Theatre. Application details and further information can be found at www.rgs.org/microlectures.
If you are interested in joining the Younger Members’ Committee and taking part in organising this exciting programme of events, please get in touch and email ymc@rgs.org.
