2020 Small Research Grant recipient Dr Tory Milner, University of Huddersfield, identfying plants while undertaking fieldwork in the Peak District in 2021, to examine the colonisation of terrestrial vegetation in an the intermittent rivers Manifold and the Hamps.
The Society’s Small Research Grants support post-PhD early career researchers, offering projects up to £3,000 each for field and desk-based research across the full breadth of geography. Since 2005 the scheme has supported 121 projects from over 50 institutions across the UK, totaling over £300,000 in grants.

The digital geographies of film and cinema: access, algorithm, and interface - Dr Alex Hastie (Coventry University) will investigate how digital streaming and entertainment platforms like Netflix shape space, social relations, the geographical imagination and geographical knowledge.

Atmospheres of (counter)terrorism in European cities - Dr Samuel Berlin (University of Plymouth) is awarded a grant for work to understand current European counter-terrorism policy and its impact on everyday experiences of urban environments in European cities.

Northern Chile's Chaku and Caycu the highest altitude desert kites in the world - Dr Adrián Oyaneder (University of Exeter) will investigate historic human-animal relations in the high-altitude Andes through the study of kite traps.

Places where memories reside: exploring memories of war in sites of conscience - Dr James Riding (Newcastle University) will conduct research in 'sites of conscience' to examine processes of remembering and forgetting after war, focusing on the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia.

Approaching middle age through non-representational theories - Dr Amy Barron (University of Manchester) is awarded a grant to support research on how ‘middle-age’ features in policies and what this age category means to those within it.

Investigating the microclimate niche of threatened Omani plant species in the Western Hajar Mountains - Dr Rebecca Senior (Durham University) will be working to assess the abundance, distribution and microclimates of threatened and range-restricted plant species in the understudied ecoregion of the Hajar Mountains in Oman.
