The Society is delighted that AS Level geography entries increased by 16.9% to 55,958 in 2014.
The data from UK exam boards and published by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) show for the first time the impact of the introduction of the EBacc, a GCSE performance measure in England, on post 16 subject choices. While AS entries for all EBacc subjects increased this year, the rise in geography is the largest.
At A Level, geography entries saw a small increase of 0.7% to 33,156 in 2014. The effect of the EBacc will not be seen on A Levels until 2015.
These increases, as reported by the DfE, show the continued popularity of geography in schools and recognition of its status as a facilitating subject. They also reflect positively on the continuing work of teachers to promote the value of geography in their classrooms, and on the support they receive from subject bodies such as the Society, which provides strong support in terms of resources, CPD training, careers guidance and networks.
