The 2021 global ranking of academic subjects, by ShanghaiRanking, has placed seven UK university departments in the top 10 higher education institutions globally for studying geography.
The geography department at the University of Oxford has been ranked first, with departments at University College London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Exeter, Durham University, the University of Sheffield and the University of Manchester also making the top 10.
With the growing importance of issues such as climate and environmental change, spatial inequalities and social justice, geography is one of the most relevant courses for our time. Geography courses are popular, demonstrated by strong completion rates and positive student feedback and graduates are highly employable and collectively receive competitive graduate salaries.

ShanghaiRanking began to publish world university ranking by academic subjects in 2009. In 2017, improved methodology was introduced and the first global ranking of academic subjects was published. The 2021 rankings of universities cover 54 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences, with more than 1,800 out of 4,000 universities across 93 countries and regions listed.
