The election of metro mayors in six city-regions across England, and the continued introduction and evolution of Combined Authorities promises much, but questions remain for the government’s model of decentralisation.
Chaired by Peter Hetherington (The Guardian), the policy forum event was organised jointly by CURDS and the Society to mark the 40th anniversary of CURDS.
Panel members Victoria Bettany (CLES), Naomi Clayton (Centre for Cities), Aileen Murphie (National Audit Office), Professor Andy Pike (CURDS) and Tom Walker (DCLG), and the audience discussed several key issues for metro mayors including their ability to address the pressing economic, social, environmental, and political challenges at hand; their role in influencing the government’s new place-based industrial strategy; accountability and democratic renewal; and how they will work with their constituent local authorities and central government.
