Our Director Professor Joe Smith discusses his plans to take the Society forward over the coming years in a fifteen minute episode of the programme ‘Direct Talk’, aired by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK World.
Filmed here at the Society late last year, the episode gives an insight into the challenges we collectively face, and the role the Society has in tackling the big issues of our time including climate change and environmental destruction.
It also tracks the personal and professional life of Professor Smith, and his path to becoming Director; from his childhood growing up in Derby through to his most recent role as Head of Geography at the Open University.
The episode showcases some of the incredible items from our Collections, from the first photographs of Everest to Frank Hurley’s documentation of Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance expedition. It then takes the audience through some of the more recent expeditions we have funded, such as our Hugging the Coast project in Indonesia and our ongoing Field Research Project Migrants on the margins.
